Mini-theme: Goals
Today’s Prompt: “What does my future self thank me for?”
These are my personal responses to today’s prompt designed to encourage you to use the prompts to develop your journaling practice. If you are not already receiving the monthly themed prompt calendar there is a sign up box below and you are very welcome to come and join us.
‘My future self’ is a popular topic in self-help. To me, my future self isn’t someone who I think is close. So I just can’t imagine my future self as a person quite far out.
However if I imagine my future self as the person who is just a few months away it does become a bit easier to imagine.
Like this:
“Three-months-from-now me might be grateful I rested instead of burning out.”
“Next-week me might thank me for planning ahead.”
“Six-months-older-me might be grateful I kept creating even when I doubted myself.”
And I could also reframe the question slightly in my mind. So instead of thinking ‘future self’ which I find the concept of difficult, I could ask:
- What would make life easier for me later?
- What am I building slowly?
- What pain am I preventing?
- What small action today creates stability tomorrow?
- What am I doing now that future-me won’t have to repair later?
So I can be future-focused, but not think in terms of ‘future me’ which is the part that I find difficult.
Also, something I’ve realised is that small answers are fine, like:
keeping a journal
walking regularly
saving money
learning discipline
building creative skills
not abandoning myself
asking for help
resting
staying consistent – gosh if I can stay consistent I’ll be really happy with myself.
So I don’t need to be extraordinary, or make a monumental leap, or be a unicorn. I can celebrate continuity and consistency equally.
This has been really useful. I’ve loved this exercise.
How about you?
