Oh gosh I’m really struggling with this. Getting that balance is so hard.
And perhaps the reason it’s difficult is that I’ve always seen consistency and slowing down as opposites:
- Consistent = disciplined, productive, always moving forward.
- Slower pace = falling behind, losing momentum, not achieving enough.
But what if consistency isn’t about the amount I do? What if it’s about the rhythm I keep?
So the way I’m going to interpret this prompt is:
“How can I keep becoming the person I want to be without feeling like I have to rush?”
That feels much more interesting and supportive.
I want to remember that consistency doesn’t have to mean doing more. It means continuing to show up, even if some days look different from others. During the summer, I want to honour the slower pace of the season while still taking small steps towards the life I’m building. Rather than trying to do everything, I want to focus on doing the important things well, leaving room for rest, sunshine, family and spontaneous moments of joy.
Looking at my life …
I’ve got quite a few “anchors” that already make me consistent:
- I write my daily journal prompts.
- I work on my business regularly.
- I walk the dogs.
- I try and exercise regularly, read regularly.
Maybe I don’t actually need to become more consistent.
I just maybe need to stop believing that consistency means filling every available hour.
Certainly for the summer.
So, perhaps my summer could look like this:
🌿 Every day
- Journal.
- Move my body.
- Do one meaningful piece of work.
- Spend time outside.
- Be present with someone I love.
That’s consistent.
I’ts not:
- Work until 9 pm.
- Complete twenty tasks.
- Always be productive.
A little exercise
This might be a lovely addition to your own journal.
Draw two columns.
“What keeps me grounded?”
Write things like:
- Journaling
- Morning walk
- Healthy meals
- Reading
- Evening in the garden
- Time with my loved ones
These are the things you want to keep.
Then another column:
“What creates unnecessary pressure?”
Perhaps:
- Feeling guilty for resting.
- Constantly checking emails.
- Thinking I should always be working.
- Comparing my progress.
- Trying to finish everything this week.
The goal isn’t to become less consistent.
It’s to become more intentional.
I wonder if the prompt could be interpreted another way
You and I don’t want to lose momentum over the summer, but we also don’t want to reach September wondering where the season went.
So perhaps the real answer is this:
Consistency isn’t about maintaining the same pace all year round. Nature doesn’t do that. Summer invites us to slow down, spend more time outdoors and enjoy lighter, longer days. We can still be consistent by keeping hold of the habits that matter most, while giving ourselves permission to let the pace soften. Sometimes consistency isn’t doing more, it’s continuing to care for what matters, gently and faithfully.
What do you think?
